Indonesia's traditional accesories

Traditional jewelry is a form of cultural wealth in Indonesia. This traditional jewelry is a witness to the prowess of our ancestors in processing metal since the time of the Dong-Song bronze culture, around 1,000 BC. The influx of Indian and Chinese influences in the archipelago in the 5th century also gave "color" to traditional jewelry made of metal. Typically, this jewelry is used for joyful celebrations, such as weddings. Apart from being a dowry, traditional jewelry is also often used as a complement to traditional clothing.

The elegant 'siger' crown symbolizes the wisdom, honor and dignity of a Sundanese bride. The butterfly-shaped flower arrangement on the bun symbolizes the wife's loyalty to her husband. The jasmine 'ronce' which extends past the shoulders is a symbol of the bride's purity.

"The traditional dress, previously used only by Balinese royalty, finds its maximum splendor in the female headdress, Gelungan, a golden crown chiseled by hand and lavishly decorated with flowers, with a height of about 40 cm with a weight that can reach 3 o 4 kg. The shape of the structure symbolizes Mount Agung, and the golden flowers placed around it are precisely the flora and abundance of the mountain." (Melania Geraci , 2024)

'Ronce' jasmine

Ronce jasmine is a string of jasmine flowers which are usually used as decoration or bridal accessories, especially in the hair. This jasmine flower arrangement is usually worn as a headdress, necklace, or hanged on keris or traditional weapon. When worn by the bride and groom, jasmine flowers symbolize the hope that the marriage will be built, starting with the purity of the body and mind of the bride and groom. It is also hoped that the households that will be fostered will always smell 'fragrant' like jasmine flowers.

Indonesia is rich in various unique and interesting handicraft products, one of the regions that produces many handicraft products is Tasikmalaya. One of the craft products is a traditional hand fan which is made from bamboo and patterned cloth such as Batik and other similar materials. At wedding events, guests usually bring their unique and luxurious hand fans, but these hand fans are also often used as souvenirs.

Bali is not only famous for its natural beauty, but also has unique and enchanting carvings. In a village called Singapadu Gianyar, most of the local people work as carvers for crafts from wood to jewelry for women. The main material used is 925% silver, with a choice of gold plated and rosegold plated colors. Apart from that, this jewelry also uses additional materials such as stones and gems that come from various regions, even some from Lombok and Thailand. These jewelries include hairpin, borsch, bracelet, and earring. Most of these Balinese Jewelry product designs are inspired by the beauty of nature, flora, fauna and traditional sculptural patterns that are encountered in daily Balinese life. These jewelries are used in religious ceremonies or weddings, to formal and semi-formal events.

These further research of traditional Indonesian jewelery will be used as a reference inspiration for my 6 design collection for my 'berkain' project.
