Experiment sketch & material: 'Batik Garutan'

Garutan batik is generally characterized by the dominance of three main types of colors, which are biron (blue), sogan (brick red) which is the influence of Yogyakarta and Cirebon batik, and ivory color. In several cases regarding motifs/designs and colors, Garutan batik has received a lot of influence from the Netherlands, Japan, and China (Arsip Digital, 2020). The colorful pattern of batik garutan reminds me of Wes Anderson films, bright, cheerful and minimalist. This summer colour Batik with fun and playful pattern that draws my attention within thousands of Indonesia's traditional Batik, and I decided to use this Batik for my second design sketch experiment.

Experiment design:

Ni Goesti Kompiang Mawar, Oil on canvas, Willem Gerard Hofker (1902-1981). 

For this week design practice, I would like to integrate the new materials that I have researched which is batik garutan. This design is inspired by a balinese woman portrait known as 'Ni Goesti Kompiang Mawar' painted by Willem Gerard Hofker. I wanted to add the fabric drapery on the shoulder and the cotton rolled top into my design. The headpiece and earrings are also inspired by the painting. For this design, I decided to try on a complimentary color of blue and orange for the color palette and using 'a' silhouette for the design piece. Instead of using watercolor, this time I wanted to practice designing on procreate and learn new technique of clipping mask to create realistic fabric pattern.
