Portfolio Design Ideas

To present my finished outcomes, I want the portfolio to be less 'stiff' in terms of layout and also the collection design (illustration). Fashion portfolio usually has a tidy and 'strict' layout, as it can be seen usually on the collection line-up pages where commonly the design illustration is drawn on the croquis with simple straight standing pose (see fig. 1). The simple and clean layout aimed to give a 'professional' and well-structured portfolio, however my vision or idea for my AP2 portfolio is going to be more 'natural' and alive.

The main concept of my portfolio is going to be a vintage-look with brown-wash pages and digitally drawn illustration that not so well-defined, which give a concept similar to 'retro-postcard'. I was also inspired by these traditional clothing illustration I found on Pinterest (see fig. 2), these illustration has the 'vintage' look I was going for.

Referring about the 'natural' pose for the collection line-up illustration discussed above, I'm planning to draw the croquis's pose in a natural movement like illustrations from fig. 3 & 4 (see images below) which I also noticed these in most costume design illustration I saw from the costume design book by Lyn Pecktal (see fig. 5), that the costume illustrations often depict figures in motion which give a visual representation of the garment flow or drape when its worn and how the costume enhanced the character's personality and mood to their role in the story.

As for my technical illustration pages, I'm planning to use the layout similar to the images below (see fig. 6), where there will be several detailed sketches of the garment and other additional piece or accessories to give a better visual illustration of the specific feature of the costume design.

When I stumbled upon Groesbeck's Javanese dancers painting (refer to fig. 7), I was thinking of adding similar gold accent to my portfolio pages as it also align with my collection color palette and concept mood board. I think the painting did an excellent work in depicting the dancer's gold costume and accessories. Although the painting was predominantly in gold, as it can be seen from the background, the figure's skin, and the figure's garment and accessories, however the dominant gold accent doesn't overwhelm me. Instead, I think it complement the whole painting well.

  1. Some interesting research elements here, Rania - have you had the time to produce any mock ups of your folio pages? Would be good to follow up with a few of these to demonstrate how this research is impacting your designs.
