Reflection

Throughout term 1, I have created a 6 designs collection titled 'berkain' for my fashion design major project. 'Berkain' is a fashion style that mixes wastra (Indonesian traditional clothing) into modern style as a campaign run by young Indonesian to preserve traditional garment in everyday outfit. Aiming to promote 'Berkain' campaign, this term project is a ready-to-wear spring & summer collection in the form of portfolio flipbook. The biggest motivation of deciding to use 'berkain' as the concept for my collection is because I wanted to introduce Indonesian unique and exquisite textile globally. Inspired by other young Indonesians who resiliently promote this campaign, I also wanted to give a contribution and take the challenge on turning outdated and traditional clothing into a couture design collection with contemporary twist. 

Because the final outcome of this project is in the form of a digital flipbook, there's several new software that I have learned from making this project including photoshop, flip snack (flipbook maker), heyzine (flipbook maker), Wix (website maker) and I got the chance to improved my digital drawing skill on procreate. Throughout the production of creating the collection I faced several challenges mainly on my organization and time management skill. For completing our major project, we are given approximately 7 weeks from planning, producing, and finalizing our final outcome and website. 

At the beginning, I was underestimating the time I would have spent to create the collection, I thought I could easily finished in just 2 weeks so for the first 3 weeks I don't make significant progress on my project. But then when we are 2 weeks closer to submission date, I was panicking because my project was far from done. Because of the stress and panicked, I can't finish the digital sketch effectively, I often have problem with 'art block' so I was not confidence in the concept and theme I have chosen which makes me re-make some of the pages and tried many other theme. At the end, I go back to my initial theme and focus on improving not changing it. Although there are a few challenges I face regarding the time management of this project, but I could finish both the website and flipbook on time before the submission date.

Overall, I was very happy with the final outcome and it exceeded my expectation at the beginning. Although the collection can be improved to look more like a professional fashion designer collection, however I was very satisfied and proud that I could produce this quite nice outcome with my limited skill and experience of creative digital software. If I will be making a similar project in the future, I would spent more time in researching and gathering enough information about the materials I will be using, the history behind it and take a deeper research on designer with similar concept as an inspiration. I would also experiment with wider range of digital software because I believe that it will be a useful skill in university and future employment.
